The Great Introduction Megathread

  • As proposed by Andreas (82MHz) , let's start the intruduction megathread.

I'm felsqualle, retro-computing enthusiast in my free time and a Linux systems administrator at work. I'm a project co-lead of ScummVM and the author of fabulous.systems.

Around 20 years ago, I got introduced to WinFellow, WinUAE and NESticle. In fact, at this point, I wasn't even aware that an Amiga is not a "normal" PC and that there were way more systems than I was aware of. Then ScummVM happened and things escalated quite a bit.

Nowadays, I'm mostly interested in MS-DOS and the Windows 9x era because that's what I used most of the time back in the day. I recently got into software preservation, so I'm slowly going through my software and games catalogue, trying to backup as many discs as possible.

For some reason, I got into old video stuff a couple of months ago as well. For example, I purchased both the PAL and NTSC versions of the Special Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings and now I'm trying to process them to make them as watchable as possible on modern TVs. Yes, I somehow like the "crispy" look of DVDs. Actually, I prefer it over 4k for movies...

  • Hi everyone, I'm Andreas aka 82mhz. That number is also the year of my birth, so you can calculate how old I currently am ;)
I came across this whole small web thing last year when I joined the Old Computer Challenge and since then I fell deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of retro computing and personal blogs and all the rest of it.

I'm also most nostalgic for the era of late 90s/early 2000s computing as that was when I was a teenager/young adult, so I have fond memories of these systems and what I was using them for at the time.

And I hate the modern tech world more and more with all the privacy nightmares, enshittification, blockchain, AI etc...

I also still buy DVDs btw because they are dirt cheap if you get them used and the quality I think is still fine, especially for older movies from 2000 and before.

  • Hi everyone,

I'm Ruben, a web developer from the UK. I first found felsqualle's website via researching recreating a Packard Bell PC experience from the '90s. I ended up blogging about it at https://www.wackomenace.co.uk/blog/2-my-first-pc/ and the memories it bought flooding back.

I've been a retro computing enthusiast for a while now. Unfortunately, I got rid of my old PCs at a time when I thought it was all about the future, something I now sorely regret. Anyway, my interest goes up and down over time but I'd love one day to find the Packard Bell PC model I had to recreate the whole experience of my youth.

I also hate the direction that computing is currently going in, and yearn for those days of old!

  • Hi Ruben, thanks for joining!

I got rid of my old PCs years ago as well when I didn't realize how important they were - that's why I'm so thankful for 86Box (Disclosure: I support them on Patreon).

Thank you very much for your blog post! It makes me really happy to inspire people!

  • Yes the recreation of the old Packard Bell is an awesome Article, really interesting, I also tried an attempt to re-create an old Game Development toolchain which uses Windows 2000 with Visual Studio 6.0 and an Intel C++ Compiler (which is lost? I have a bit of Infos from it but not much unfortunately), i did some research but its currently stopped, I did it in VirtualBox but i consider to migrate it over to 86Box. I am aswell interested in Software preservation.

  • Hi BJNFNE, thanks a lot for joining us and for your feedback!

A development environment that requires both Visual Studio 6.0 and a special non-MSVC compiler sounds really interesting - I always assumed that things that used VS were also relying on the built-in compiler and maybe using a few libraries, but an external compiler is new to me - so that's today's TIL moment!

  • its common for the Intel C++ Compiler to save these Information in the EXE, Loader7.exe was nearly always compiled in Debug mode aswell, i have also an debug symbol file of Loader7.exe (Loader7.map) i try to reverse engineer it maybe someday we support in ScummVM.

  • Hola from California! I've got a million interests -- writing, making music, digital art, physical media -- but retrocomputing is definitely one of my favorites. I love my Atari 1040 STF and I like to play games on my Windows XP machine. At the moment I'm *super* into Mac OS 9 -- emulator only, no vintage Apple hardware at the moment. I regret getting rid of the family's old Performa!

If I could get my act together, then I'd be working on some ScummVM code, too (my branch is woefully out of date, heh)

Fun fact! I'm also a NetBSD developer, which is definitely the most retro-oriented of the BSDs.

  • Hi dressupgeekout, thanks for joining us! Having someone familiar with NetBSD here is simply great! I have an HP-UX machine that I'd like to get running with NetBSD since ages, just finally have to find a way to emulate a SCSI CD-ROM drive without having to pay a fortune. Or I go the netbooting route, but that sounds... evil.

Have you heard about NCommander's current experiments with NetBSD on VAX?

  • Hello There! I'm Arcee, Captain of the Pentium Pirates. I am a retro computer enthusiast specializing in Mid 90s to Early 2000s x86 hardware and software. My goal here is to document all sorts of retro tech shenanigans, be it documenting old and obscure software, computer build sagas, how-to tutorials, etc. I plan to post full community posts here, but you can follow me up to date @ captainarcee@cdrom.tokyo

    Hope y'all enjoy the posts!
